Goldmund’s universal Blu-ray player

What you see here is Goldmund’s Eidos Reference Blue universal Blu-ray player. This 180 pound mammoth comes with a stand, as you can see, that works towards dampening any and all vibrations the player itself could produce.

Of course, the chances of any of us getting our hands on this player (read: too expensive) are slim to none considering only 50 units will be produced and offered to Goldmund subscribers.

Chunghop Universal Remote Review–Inexpensive But Utilitarian

Sometimes you just need a product that can get the job done.  And the Chunghop Universal Remote definitely falls into that class.

Basically, it’s a universal remote, with all that entails.  It’s designed to be a functional replacement for any of a host of remote possibilities, including DVD players, cable receivers and television sets.  Most of the major brands are actually compatible with the Chunghop, and there are actually only a handful that I know of that aren’t.  The remote itself handles very smoothly, with programming codes input via numerical keypad.

There are a couple downsides to this remote, though–my biggest problem is that it can’t handle a Dish Network receiver but it CAN handle a Direct TV receiver.  That’s a pretty glaring omission as far as I’m concerned.  Also, some functions are a little cumbersome on this one, especially just starting out.

But, the Chunghop is actually a great remote once you get past the learning curve.  It’ll do the job nicely, and considering that you can actually buy these for under eight bucks a crack, that’s definitely a reason to sit up and take notice.  If you can’t find your remote any more, you may want to consider a Chunghop.

Oh, and a special note for Cyber Theatre readers–the folks out at Budgetgadgets.com, who sent us one of these to try out, also has a special offer.  If you do go pick one of these up,  at the checkout, use coupon code SM5OFF17 for five percent off your order.  Pretty sweet, no?

Sweet Home Theatre Setup–Michael Piwonka

Michael Piwonka, who likes to show off the various facets of his life over at piwonka dot com on Blogger, gave us a look at his sweet home theatre setup.

Of course, this sweet setup contains the standard things you’d expect to find–a windowless room with a projector and speakers, but he’s done some things that somewhat separate this from the norm.  One, check out those speaker mounts.  Those are actually birdbath stands that he got at Home Depot.  And for home theatre furniture, he’s got an old futon (apparently he had to fight his wife to get that included in there) and what looks like a chaise lounge.

And also notice that the room is painted in a flat brown, not quite the ideal chocolate brown intended to give the best possible contrast, but definitely closer than, say, blue.

Michael Piwonka definitely has a sweet home theatre setup, and we all hope he’s getting plenty of great movie watching time in on it.

Free Tool To Calibrate Your HDTV!

Okay, you may not know this, and it’ll probably shock you to find it out, but there’s a good chance that the brand spanking new HDTV you just bought and got home was, get this, IMPROPERLY CALIBRATED.  That means all sorts of nasty things, like skin tones and other colors will be off and so on.

Under normal circumstances, calibration would require a DVD valued at between twenty and fifty dollars, or a costly visit to Best Buy’s Geek Squad.  Under NORMAL circumstances, anyway–now, we’ve got something different.  Just head on over to XVHD.tv, where they’ve got waiting for you a free to download utility designed to calibrate your brand new HDTV and make sure it’s presenting its display in the best possible fashion.  It’ll help with geometry, sharpness, color levels and plenty more.

This looks like a pretty sweet utility, but from the look of it you’ll need a PC connected to your TV to do the tests.  Other than that, there’s not much to complain about here–a free utility that helps calibrate your HDTV is too impressive for words.

Sweet Home Theatre Setup–The RAF

Some of the best home theatre setups are modular in nature,   They can, as the months and years go by and technology improves, be taken apart with relative ease and rebuilt with the new and improved technology.  After all, 1080p may just be the beginning.

And over on The RAF Home Theatre, the site’s owner has set out for you the story of a home theatre setup almost a decade in the making.  For instance, he’s upgraded the projector at least once, and added a Playstation 3 to serve as both gaming device and Blu-Ray player, which is actually really smart.  Meanwhile, he’s also got the standard array of speakers in there, and for home theatre furniture, he’s got what look like a few actual home theatre seats and a slew of wall shelves for movies.

It’s a good setup in that it’s very easily converted in the event of new technology, so it’s definitely got the versatility edge that a lot of other setups would have a hard time matching because of lots of hardwired points.  What if this guy had put up paneling and such?  That would’ve been a disaster for him, trying to move things around and get stuff broken out so he could replace both it and whatever paneling he’d put up.

No, this is a sweet home theatre setup–it’s got plenty of room to grow, and can accomplish most tasks set before it with a minimum of difficulty.

New Zealanders Get Streaming TV Network Starting Today!

It’s called Ziln, ladies and gentlemen, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why it’s called that.

But Ziln does do something very interesting; it provides an array of programming choices all in streaming video.  It includes seven full-on New Zealand channels, as well as fourteen news and business channels, including Al-Jazeera, all piped in through set-top boxes.

It’s designed to provide an alternative to mainstream New Zealand television, and it’s the kind of thing that could definitely take off.  In order to kill a streaming network, you’re pretty much going to have to either shut down the site from which the stream originates or you’ll have to shut down the entire internet.  And once you do THAT, well, all hell’s going to break loose, make no mistake about that.

Anyway, this is a great move for New Zealanders, who apparently have the internet access and bandwidth to handle a streaming network.  Who knows where such a development will lead from there?

Kodak showcases underwater OLED display

What you see above are some Lego characters starting in awe at a glass jar. However, what’s actually in the glass jar is what’s important. Kodak has recently used this promo picture to let the world know that they are working on underwater OLED displays.

As of now, they are in their early stages of development but who’s to say in a few years we won’t be seeing underwater home theaters?

Crazy? Yes. Practical? No. Going to happen? Probably.

Dallas Cowboys to Keep HD Scoreboard for Now

Remember the whole problem with that giant HD scoreboard from the Dallas Cowboys stadium? Well it looks like the NFL has decided to allow the screen on top of that field at least for this season. In case the huge screen will get hit again then it’s going to be a dead ball and the clock and down will both be reset. In case you missed the incident then check the video above. I wonder how many times the screen will get hit during the following games!
