GE ‘s Micro-Holographic Discs

Ge Logo Recently, GE proudly announced the development of a new optical storage technology, called Micro-Holographic Discs. Designed to be able to read and record on systems that are like a DVD player, these discs are capable of supporting 500 gigabytes of storage in a typical DVD size disc.

Holographic Data StorageMicro-Holographic Discs can also be considered as the next Blu-ray with the amazing features. These discs feature such hardware and formats that are quite similar to optical storage technologies used to play back CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

The new Micro-Holographic Discs feature cost-effective and reliable holographic drives. These discs are also capable of supporting high-resolution formats like 3D television. To know more about Micro-Holographic Discs, you can feel free to visit www.ge.com/research.

General Electric Announces 500-Gigabyte Discs

Certainly, this development has pushed the era of Blu-ray discs to another level, further bolstering the storage capacity of discs with a major breakthrough in the development of next generation optical storage technology. GE researchers have successfully demonstrated a threshold micro-holographic storage material that can support 500 gigabytes of storage capacity in a standard DVD-size disc. This is equal to the capacity of 20 single-layer Blu-ray discs, 100 DVDs or the hard drive for a large desktop computer.

GE’s micro-holographic discs will be able to be read and recorded on systems very similar to a typical Blu-ray or DVD player. Holographic storage is different from today’s optical storage formats like DVDs and Blu-ray discs. DVDs and Blu-ray discs store information only on the surface of the disc; holographic storage technology uses the entire volume of the disc material.

Holograms, or three-dimensional patterns that represent bits of information, are written into the disc and can then be read out. Although GE’s holographic storage technology represents a breakthrough in capacity, the hardware and formats are so similar to current optical storage technology that the micro-holographic players will enable consumers to play back their CDs, DVDs and BDs.

GE initially will be focusing on the commercial archival industry followed by the consumer market for its micro-holographic storage technology.

China to Debut HD NVD?

We have a new Blu-ray alternative coming from good old China. It’s a high definition disc format called the NVD. HD NVD players went on sale today in Wuhan. The HD NVD will bring you 12GB of storage on a red laser disc format.

Will this new device make money for China? As we speak, 80% of the world’s DVDs and players are produced in China, but the profit doesn’t go to China. These HD NVDs can increase by 4-5 times the profit. But will these NVD succeed?

Corsair Brings a 2.5-Inch 128GB SSD to the Table

Ready to finally go SSD or are you still waiting for cheaper, bigger versions of those solid-state drives? Corsair is ready to step up to that challenge or at least part of it. The company has a 2.5-inch 128GB SSD which is big enough but not cheap enough yet. This MLC NAND-based drive will cost $449 which is a little too much, isn’t it? And those 90MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write speeds won’t impress us either are they?

We’re counting on Corsair to bring us bigger SSD drives in the future now that they showed us they can make them.

Redesigned SSD to Offer Better Performance?

Weather we like it or not, SSDs are going to slowly replace HDDs in the future. And if the SSD becomes way cheaper than it already is, then what’s not to like?

And it looks like experts are saying that SSD performance might double, quadruple or more if they were built-in the computer motherboard instead of being connected through something else to it. Is this how the future will look like? Well what will happen when we will want to change our motherboards? On the other hand think about how our future all-in-one computers or DVRs could perform with one of these new SSD concepts inside?
