They just come bigger and bigger and Hitachi is sure to get some inquiries on this new PDP TV prototype that measures 50” and “thickness of 1.5 inches” (approx. 35mm). Hitachi aims to commercialize this ultra-thin PDP TV this year which is certain to have a number of consumers wanting to have it for their own.

The key factor that enabled the thickness reduction was the enhanced luminance efficiency of the panel. Although the efficiency value and the degree of improvement were not specified, the new PDP TV is reportedly able to ensure the luminance at a certain level with a lower input power, thereby making it easier to overcome a technical hurdle relating to the heat dissipation.

The company expects that the luminance efficiency will be further improved and the power consumption will be reduced by then.
