Pioneer’s World’s First 16-Layer Optical Disc

First 16-Layer Optical Disc Pioneer Corporation has finally succeeded in developing a 16-layer read-only optical disc with a huge capacity of 40 gigabytes for the first time in the world. This development is truly an achievement for Pioneer and has boosted its confidence in the feasibility of a large-capacity optical disc that will be needed in the future.

The new 16-layer optical disc technology is capable of storing much more data than was possible earlier in the conventional discs. It will help reducing the number of discs used and therefore help in contributing to the conservation of resources. Pioneer 16-Later Optical Disc features a wide-angle spherical aberration compensator and light-receiving element that can read out weak signals at a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Pioneer has in fact solved the problems of obtaining clear signals from each recording layer in a stable manner by utilizing the optical disc production technology in its 16-layer optical disc. You will also be glad to know that it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs. Pioneer is soon going to present the details of this mind-blowing research at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 that will be held in Hawaii from July 13.
