100-inch 3D HDTV Coming from HDI?

Whether you like it or not, you have to get used to the idea that more and more manufacturers out there are considering 3D HDTVs or even making them as we speak. The latest player in the 3D HDTV game is a California-based startup called HDI. The company is preparing something totally new! A 100-inch 3D HDTV which will be the world’s first laser-based 3D HDTV. According to CTO Edumund Sandberg, the quality of this TV will greatly surpass anything else the competition is currently working on. Apparently this laser-based 3D HDTV is so fast that the image “no longer needs to flash from one eye to the other.” Does that sound too good to be true? We’ll probably see more in the near future and keep you guys posted.

YouTube Starts Experimenting with 3D Videos

To tell you the truth I am not a big fan of 3D videos or movies simply because my eyes seem to hate those glasses. But there are plenty of people who would contradict me so it’s no wonder that YouTube, a very popular video service, is considering expanding its service to offer 3D videos in the future.

Fortunately for us YouTube is not only going to let you upload your 3D movies but it will also offer a variety of viewing styles. With YouTube involved into the whole 3D action we should expect to see the 3D videos industry grow a lot faster than we could have anticipated. Anyone already excited about 3D videos?

Wraparound Screens Displays Air Traffic in Real Tim with Lots of Details

The screen in the picture above is one of the coolest screens I’ve seen in a while now. What it does is pretty smart and pretty simple. The screen shows all the Lufthansa flights at once and that’s happening in 3D with the help of a 180-degree, 46-foot-wide screen. It will take a while until you can set something like that up in your huge expensive house but it would be certainly interesting to see it at work in different circumstances. Let’s say a movie or, why not, a cool video game?

And since the screen shows about 16,000 Lufthansa flights at once we should assume that the machine powering all that is even more impressive than the whole display.

3D QL Xperience Video Eyewear

3D QL Xperience Video Eyewear

3D QL Xperience Video Eyewear

Q-London isn’t the first company to come up with the idea of video glasses, but they claim that their new 3D QL Xperience Video Eyewear gives the viewer the same experience of watching an 80″ TV from 2 meters away. Likewise, the headset the QL glasses come with has a built in rechargeable battery, and infra-red remote control, adapter cables, mini-jacks and a USB charging cable.

Those that want to use the QL Xperience Video Glasses for their iPod must have an adapter, but these are available. The one downside is that there’s no diopter adjustment for those needing to wear glasses, so you may want to look at other options if this is the case for you. Retails for around $310.00 US.

New HDMI 1.4 to support Ethernet, 3D

When the HDMI cable first hit store shelves it effectively took the market by storm; combining HD video and HD audio all into one cable was something people had never seen before. Well, HDMI has come along way and the guys behind the interface are gearing up to launch its latest version, version 1.4

This new version will not only continue to support both HD video and audio but it will now throw Ethernet and 3D into the mix. This means with one cable you’ll have HD video, audio, Ethernet and 3D an almost ridiculous amount of stuff to stuff into such a small space. But that’s not all, it was also announced that HDMI 1.4 will support video resolutions up to 4x greater than whats currently being offered today, 1080p.

When these cables do hit the market there will be 4 different versions, standard and high speeds. The only different between the versions is that they will come with or without Ethernet. This is obviously to keep the cable in the hands of those who can’t afford to pay a premium for such a luxury.

Kicker Studio Gesture Control Entertainment System

3D Gesture Control System

3D Gesture Control System

In recent years there has been an increasing effort to create 3D computer interfaces and televisions. Now, it may be time for the television to see us -in 3D. Since 1999, Canesta has been working on a range of low-cost, chip-based 3-D sensors that can be built into just about anything – from TVs and PCs to cars - and now the technology has filtered into real-world applications like Kicker Studio’s gesture control entertainment system. Canesta’s new perception technology chips can “see” three dimensionally in real time.

A thrilling application for this technology is now being showcased by Kicker Studio in an entertainment system that is controlled by gestures. The entertainment system can react to a number of gestures to allow control of audio and video content such as fast forward, channel change and play back. Amazingly, it can also be sensitive enough to a single control master in a room with many individuals so no more fighting over the remote control. (Photo: Kicker Studios and Gizmag).

LG Unveils Full HD 3D Monitor

LG is getting ready for the future of 3D monitors and it has a full HD 3D monitor to brag with. The new monitor is also supposed to be able to achieve the highest brightness level ever reached by any panel. We don’t have all the details yet and we have no idea if this prototype will go into mass production. What we do know is that such a panel still needs those annoying glasses to properly offer you that 3D action.

PureDepth’s “Multi-Layer” 3D Displays

If you’re looking for a “Multi-Layer” 3D display then that’s what you’re going to get. PureDepth is working on such technology right now and the company will start production of 12.1-inch displays next week.

How does “Multi-Layer” 3D works? Well these displays are made from two LCD screens placed a few inches a part. The displays will then deliver 3D images without the need of special glasses. We have no idea when these new displays are coming out and what gadgets will use them but we’ll keep you posted.

Sony Comes Up with New 3D Screen

Sony has displayed a new 3D screen at the Finetech Japan 2009 and you might just end up buying one of those in the near or distant future. I’ll bet my money on distant future for now since I’m not exactly sure how many people will enjoy watching that many TV programs with 3D goggles on. Stereoscopic displays might be the 3D way to go…

The Japanese event will end tomorrow so if you’re anywhere around it then you should check things out and especially Sony’s exhibition area for more 3D details.

Mitsubishi 3D Touchscreen Is Aware of Your Presence

Mitsubishi has a new touchscreen display which can track the location of your finger and it’s also aware of the depth. The 3D display has a precision from 0.08mm to 20mm and everything is done without cameras or sensors. The panel can interpret the speed of the approaching finger which is quite an interesting feature. Are we going to be able to control our TVs by gestures only? It looks that way. And we’re probably going to have gesture-controlled panels of various sizes mounted in all sorts of devices in the near future.

Sky to Bring 3D TV to UK by the End of the Year

If you live in the UK you might be lucky enough to get 3D TV by the end of the year. Sky has been testing 3D broadcasting capabilities and it’s getting ready to present the 2012 London Olympics like never before.

Sky’s Chief Engineer Chris Johns says that Sky has the “capability for homes to see 3D by year-end.” That’s a bold statement especially as it wasn’t backed up by any solid proof. Johns failed to provide exact dates and we don’t know what type of 3D systems will be needed for it. We’ll be just around the corner, waiting for specific details.

3D OLED Displays Become a Reality

Everyone seems to want 3D displays these days. And those of you dreaming about a 3D OLED display should get in touch with Eiji Shiko from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. He has developed an OLED device ready to emit circularly polarized light in the visible light range. That means 3D OLED displays have just become a reality. When will we see the new technology in action? When will we be able to purchase 3D OLED displays? It might just be too early to tell, but we’ll certainly keep you posted on this one.

iPoint 3D Will Bring Gesture Controls to Your 3D Display

We have one more 3D gadget to show you, one that will affect the way you will use a future 3D display. It’s the iPoint 3D from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft which is a technology that will let you control your 3D display with simple gestures. There’s no need for actually touching the panel or using 3D glasses. The new technology will be officially unveiled at the CeBIT next week, so we might have more information for you then.
