Samsung Starts Production on Ultra-Slim Edge-Lit LED Backlit HDTVs

Samsung will be soon unveiling new ultra-slim LCD panels with something to add. The added bonus is the edge-lit LED backlighting. Samsung offers lighter weight and thinner designs compared to standard direct-lit LED LCDs, and moreover, a 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting “uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.

“The panels measure just 0.42-inches thick and are being produced in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes. We’re still waiting to hear back from Sammy on whether these are the same ones used in the energy-efficient LCD HDTVs announced at CES or new models altogether, but ’til then, you can feel free to start digging in the couches for spare pennies.

Gefen EXT-WHDMI Wireless HDMI Extender

Wireless video transmission has now been made possible and a lot of them were seen firsthand at the recent CES 2009. Among the notable brands that showcased wireless video transmission capability were Panasonic and LG.

As far as the actual wireless HDMI systems, the Gefen EXT-WHDMI is one that is immediately available in the market at but a hefty price. It lets users who want a custom installation skip the cost of running wires from source components to a wall-mounted flat-panel HDTV or ceiling-mounted projector. Its 30-foot range isn’t really designed to blast signals from one side of the house to the other, or outside, but within the same room it works basically as advertised.

The professional-grade Gefen EXT-WHDMI may not quite match the quality of an actual HDMI cable, but its solid transmissions make it a viable candidate when wireless HDMI is the best option.

Panasonic Unleashes Thin Profile Plasma and HDTV Prototypes

Panasonic is scheduled to release a couple of Ultra-thin prototypes of its Plasma and HDTV line at the CES, aiming to provide better advancements as far as picture quality and environmental performance is concerned.

Banking on their newly developed NeoPDP technology, Panasonic aims to deliver new TV solutions to cater to viewing demands and environmental concerns. Among the environmental concerns include that of more energy efficient flat panel televisions, a common problem that energy hogging Plasmas and HDTVs have been known for.

By taking advantage of the vertically integrated business model for PDPs and LCDs, Panasonic continues to accelerate its technology development, according to characteristics of each device, in order to facilitate the continuing evolution of flat-panel VIERA TVs and to respond to the ever-diversifying needs of its global customers.

Higher-Efficiency LED Display to Be Developed

LED-backlit HD displays have been popping up everywhere lately, including the 2009 CES. Scientists from the Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute and Samsung have been working on this LED technology and it looks like they have developed a new polarization-matched LED that will get you 18% more light despite being 22% more efficient that former LEDs. These LEDs will turn less power into light if fed higher currents and apparently you will be saving some money too. There aren’t any official announcements regarding the future release of this new technology so we don’t have prices for you either. Are these new LED displays coming to us this year or should we expected to arrive only after CES 2010?

Where the Deals Are

January is one of the best times to get a great deal on a home theater package or on home theater components at every price point. Not only are big box electronic stores marking down their Christmas overstock (sometimes as much as 60% to 75%), by late January most stores are making additional markdowns to clear out old stock and make room for new models. The Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas Nevada is held in January of each year, and every electronics store wants to be the first to offer the latest, hottest new products.

That means the old stuff has to be cleared out before the first orders start to arrive in mid-February. This year, look for even deeper discounts as big box stores struggle with a slow economy and increasing job losses and cash flow problems. The best deals can often be found on off-brands, so if this is your first home theater system don’t be put off by trying one if you get a fabulous price. Just make sure the product actually meets your needs by carefully considering the features and specs ahead of purchase.
