HDMI2C1-5DIJ Chip Set to Change HDTV Technology

Let’s get a bit techie for a moment. One thing about home theater equipment is that you may find it cramp if you get the chance to view the inner components of these devices. But all that seems to change soon thanks to a new chip, the HDMI2C1-5DIJ chip that aims to save manufacturers 70% less board space while not sacrificing quality from HDMI products. This includes products like set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, game consoles and HDTVs.

With this new chip, we can expect lighter and perhaps smaller devices in the near future. One thing you may be noticing is the heavy weight and large scale sizes of some HD products. The HDMI2C1-5DIJ is a companion for ST’s HDMIULC6-4SC6, which protects HDMI video/audio signal lines. This has ultra-low line capacitance of 0.6pF and bandwidth greater than 5GHz, allowing designers to implement HDMI-compliant ESD protection while also maximizing signal integrity.

The HDMI2C1-5DIJ is available in a 16-lead QFN 5 x 4 package, priced at $0.90 for orders of 1000 pieces.

Soyo Files for Chapter 7

Soyo may not be familiar to most of us, but they are really the people behind the Honeywell TVs. They also make LCD monitors, portable hard drives and Bluetooth ear devices. Now that you have an idea of what this company is all about, you can also note that they will soon be a company that was once standing.

The company stopped operations earlier this month and has officially filed for Chapter 7. In case you don’t know, Chapter 7 means the company is planning on liquidating its remaining assets, with no plans to reorganize under a new repayment plant to creditors.

While Honeywell wasn’t one of the top brands of TVs, its exit from the TV market is yet another sign of the ongoing shakeout taking place in the consumer electronics business. Syntax-Brillian, maker of Olevia brand HDTVs, filed for bankruptcy last summer, shortly after Philips turned over its North American TV operations to Funai.

HDTV Manufacturers May Suffer for Price Hikes

HDTV Manufacturers may have enjoyed large sums of profits by increasing their prices but one thing they should now look back to is when they implemented price increases. The reason being here is that improper timing of price adjustments may affect consumer demand, an occurrence that may very well reflect in their product sales due to the recession.

According to Retrevo’s index, prices for HDTV products began to rise in mid-January, with the average selling price surging approximately 30% from January to mid-April. During the same time period, Retrevo’s index shows consumer demand for HDTVs continued to weaken, while other electronics product categories remained flat or increased slightly. Retrevo speculates that high prices may have discouraged buyers with a resulting decrease in demand.

“It is typically not a good strategy to increase prices at a time when consumers are hunkering down and trying to save money,” said Vipin Jain, CEO of Retrevo. “Reduced advertising on the part of brands and retailers, as well as some seasonality, has likely also contributed to weak demand. The good news for consumers is that our April data revealed that HDTV prices have leveled off and might even be heading back down. So, if you are in the market for a new HDTV, now is a good time to start tracking prices and looking for deals. Retrevo will continue to track HDTV trends and deals throughout May and report back at the end of the month.”
