The demand continues to increase for the LCD TV market. In what is practically the same as the first quarter storm for the demand for LCD TVs, the market shares for it jumped from 62% to 67% as more people have shifted towards the LCD technology for home entertainment needs.
But the same could not be said as revenues have continued to dip. As consumers continue to select lower priced and best buy devices and gadgets, the TV market revenues have shown continued depreciation as customers try to be afloat with the continued global crisis.
Samsung remained the global brand share leader in revenues with a record revenue share of 23.0% and also hitting a record unit share of 18.2%. LGE remained at number 2 after surpassing Sony in the first quarter of this year. Sony held the #3 brand position worldwide in revenues, although losing a little more than a point on shares.
Is it surprising to find LG Electronics overtaking erstwhile electronics manufacturing giant Sony Corp? At least for the first half of 2009, LG Electronics has made some headway with its aggressive push on various LCD TV launches, leading to its record breaking run and thus becoming the world’s second-largest manufacturer of liquid crystal displays (LCD) TV.
The sales figures don’t lie but you just have to look at the products launched from the previous months. There is no doubt that LG Electronics has released a variety of TV solutions under the LCD niche that have led towards the customer preference. Sony Corp. for its part has been unveiling its own share of LCD TVs, but not as many compared to LG Electronics which is obviously enjoying its finest year yet despite the economic blues.
For the record, LG electronics has sold 6.74 million units of LCD TVs globally compared to Sony Corporation’s 6.54 million units. That measly .2 million difference was all LG Electronics (12.6%) needed to jump to the number 2 spot as far as market share is concerned. Sony fell to third spot (11.4%) in the market share which is being dominated by Samsung Electronics (19.9%) as of late.
Hannspree North America Inc. may not be among the popular brands that consumers would associate as far as HD LCD TVs are concerned but perhaps now they will be. Today, they have launched a new 25” 1080p full HD LCD TV in the 25-inch ST251MKB.

With the rising demand for LCD TV dramatically rising, it is not surprising that Sharp Corp. of Japan is exploring options to expand its LCD manufacturing bases. And while they have their share of local factories, it seems that the need to branch out to other countries has become a need. And one of the countries Sharp is eyeing is China.
China seems to be a feasible place to set up a new factory for their LCD production needs. For one, China is among the top countries who have a large demand for LCD TVs. So should a local factory be put up in China, this becomes beneficial to Chinese locals considering they can instantly get an LCD if they should be buying and have a local service station that can address LCD problems should they come up.
Sharp President Mikio Katayama said that they sold 1.04 million LCD TVs in China last year and is expected to exceed its sales target of 1.2 million LCD TVs for the current business year.
LG Electronics unveils a new line of LCD TVs, reinforced with their own TruMotion 200Hz processing. This only means that when it comes to fast picture scenes, the level of pixels produced and frames missed can only get smaller.
LG’s TruMotion processing inserts three extra digitally generated frames for every ‘real’ frame. The process however offers a great deal more than simply inserting the preceding frame three times in quick succession. LG employ some technological wizardry to ‘estimate’ what each new frame should look like, the aim being to further enhance fluidity of motion.
The LH5000 series is available in 32in, 37in, 42in, and 47in varieties and has the advantage of being the cheapest 200Hz equipped LCD TV’s around. The new LG range also comes complete with 4 HDMI inputs, a claimed 80,000:1 contrast ratio and Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolutions.
Everyone is leaning towards getting their own LCD TV soon to get the best visuals and projection that they have been touted to have. And while that is apparent, member LCD TV manufacturing companies have come together to make sure that new and upcoming LCD TVs adhere towards the being energy efficient and adhere to eco-friendly standards.
LCD TVs have been criticized for being power moochers but as soon as the line is drawn on adhering towards energy efficiency standards, you can bet that all of these issues will be laid to rest. The call for energy efficiency has been buzzing around and as far as the LCD TV market is concerned, the need to make sure that no sacrifice in quality and that consumers get what they are paying for must be satisfied.
”We are proud to be at the forefront of helping make LCD TVs better, more energy efficient and in many ways a “greener” product for the world’s consumers, and will continue these efforts in conjunction with companies, brands and governmental organizations in the future,” noted Bruce Berkoff, Chairman of the LCD TV Association.

Similar to what other TV manufacturing companies are employing, Vizio is the latest one to announce that they are scrapping their Plasma TV biz. This will take effect starting the second quarter and will most likely be permanent since Vizio plans to focus on its LCD line.
Cost-cutting measures is seen as the reason behind this development as most companies in the TV industry try to come up with cost-efficient measures to survive the current economic conditions. Plasma televisions are dying and with a market that is slowly dwindling in demand, Vizio is better off addressing the growing demand for LCD TVs.
“From sometime in the second quarter, Vizio won’t sell its plasma television sets and possibilities are very low that the company will re-enter the plasma business,” a high-ranking executive said Friday.
“To tackle worsening profitability in the company’s overall TV business, Vizio needs to further concentrate on LCD TVs,” according to the executive who asked not to be identified.
