TwonkyBeam–Weird Name, Awesome Idea

I know talking about something with a name like TwonkyBeam is sure to draw some eyebrows, but this really is an awesome idea.  Basically, someone finally realized that the Internet is jam packed with awesome entertainment options of every stripe and description.  But it’s not exactly easy to move them around, and this is where TwonkyBeam comes in.

There’s a video to demonstrate how it works below, but it’s a plug-in for Internet Explorer 6.0 and up (there’s no need to rush the stage and lynch me yet–rest assured that support is in the works for both Mac and FIrefox) that will let you pull media from any website with photo, music or video and send it directly, whole and breathing, to a DLNA / UPnP compatible device.

Just in case that technobabble got you a bit confused too, here’s a good example–with TwonkyBeam, you can send photos from Flickr directly to a digital picture frame.

This, frankly, is an awesome idea and will no doubt save teenage boys hundreds of hours that would otherwise have been spent trying to save porn and bootleg comics pages to a DVD to watch later.  But for the rest of us, there’s actually plenty of other worthwhile uses, and I’m glad this program exists.

Watch Netflix Videos on Your Mac with Plex Media Player

If you own a Mac and want to stream some content from Netflix then you should install the Plex Media player. The program will let you do pretty much anything. You can listen to music, check your email, view photos and watch TV shows from DVDs or other streaming sources and even emulate games. And now you can stream videos from Netflix. Here’s one more reason why good old Blockbuster is going down while Netflix is gaining more and more momentum. At this rate they’ll find a way to stream movies to any gadget as long as you’re willing to pay for them.

Apple updates Mac mini

Ever since the Mac mini was released I’ve always thought of how good of an addition it would make, coupled with an external harddrive, for a home theater.

Well today Apple announced that they are pumping up the power on their little machine. Apparently, the new videocard, Nvidia 9400M, is 5 times better than the previous one. It will also include more RAM, dual display support, and more USB ports.

The prices won’t be bumped up, they will stay at $599 for the lesser model and $699 for the more powerful model.

Boxee Supports ABC Streaming Videos

So if you have been playing on your Boxee you might have noticed that it supports now ABC streaming. That means you can enjoy Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs and more shows immediately. Unfortunately you have to use Boxee on an OS X system. If you own a Windows or Linux powered system, you will have to wait to get that ABC streaming on it. ABC needs a 3rd party download which isn’t supported at all by Linux users. Probably the near future will bring you that much needed software, so everyone can enjoy ABC. After all ABC wouldn’t want to send potential viewers to NBC, CBS or FOX, would it?

ViBook DisplayLink USB-to-DVI Gives You Support for Up to 6 Screens

Here’s a neat gadget which will get you access to 6 screens to use for your work or fun. ViBook’s DisplayLink USB-to-DVI box has the much needed software to get those images displayed on up to 6 screens at once. That means you will be able to play with a gianormous Windows desktop made out of 1600 x 1200 22-inch displays. Just buy more ViBooks.

Oh and Mac users will have only 4 screens to play with if they get the ViBooks. One black box costs $130 and it should be available in a store near you.

Netflix Brings Watch Instantly to Macs

If you’ve one who uses a Mac with your hometheater you will be relieved to learn that Netflix has finally brought Watch Instantly to Mac OS X.

Netflix’s streaming ability comes to Mac thanks to Microsoft’s Flash-like software, Silverlight. Those using an older Mac, however, will be disapointed to hear that this feature is only available on Macs running OS X.

Sorry guys, seems like it’s time for an upgrade!
