Telegent Brings Free-to-Air TV to Latin America

Being able to watch TV content on your mobile phone has been out there in the market but has not really made any headway just yet. Hopefully though when this is brought to the Latin America market, mobile users will be able to appreciate and look at handy TV viewing right at their fingertips.

And now with this new service being brought to the mobile industry by Telegent Systems, the new free-to-air feature aims to build up the market for mobile TV viewing demand.

Since last year, subsidiaries of America Movil and Telefonica that are the leading operators in their country have deployed multiple models of Telegent-enabled TV handsets that allow consumers to receive live, free-to-air broadcast TV programs at no extra cost. Free-to-air TV phones provide an additional benefit to operators.

Because they leverage the existing broadcast ecosystem and TV content, operators are able to deliver the TV feature to customers without a significant financial investment in infrastructure and content licensing, and customers are able to access TV on their mobile without having to pay more for a service.

“A significant market exists for consumers who want the familiar TV content and broadcast delivery available on free-to-air TV handsets,” said Anna Maxbauer, market analyst with IMS Research. “IMS estimates market demand for analog TV handsets at more than 150 million units in 2013.”

BET Deploys Motorola Powered HD Solution

Normally, you would expect Motorola to be focusing on the mobile industry. However, this is something that has somewhat diverted the Motorola brand to a niche where they are perhaps aiming to penetrate. Motorola today announced that BET has implemented Motorola’s high definition (HD) MPEG-4/AVC encoding system to deliver its programming in HD. The deployed system has enabled BET to easily integrate new MPEG-4 HD channels with its existing DigiCipher II uplink systems to deliver high quality video with very efficient distribution and bandwidth utilization.

BET will deploy a hybrid uplink system using SE-5100 HD, a real-time, full resolution high-definition and standard definition AVC video encoder which builds on the previously deployed DigiCipher(R) II platform to distribute its programming via satellite. The program content will be received by Motorola’s DSR-6050, which is already deployed by many North American programmers to reduce HD bandwidth requirements up to 75 percent through advanced modulation and MPEG-4 video encoding. The DSR-6050 transcodes MPEG-4 HD content into a MPEG-2 format for legacy cable subscribers with MPEG-2 set-tops.

As a long-time leader in HD digital compression systems and a member of the Grand Alliance HD encoding effort, Motorola has deployed hundreds of HD encoding systems in the MPEG-2 standard. The MPEG-4/AVC technology has been optimized for today’s content requirements, handling both 1920 x 1080i and 1280 x 720p resolutions at approximately half the bandwidth required with similar MPEG-2 coded signals.
