TiVo sells premium TV video recorder at reduced price

TiVo Inc. recently announced a trimmed-down, less expensive version of its digital video recorder for high-definition televisions. The latest TiVo HD model has the capacity to record up to 20 hours of high-resolution TV signals. The company will ship the product during August at an expected price of $300. Another premium quality model Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder with the capacity to hold about 30 hours of HD programming is tagged $800.

Don’t you think it’s dearer? So what? They say it has more high-end audio and video features. Whatever, both models are expensive for a cable set-top box, a device that many consumers receive for a negligible monthly fee from their cable or satellite TV provider. Even TiVo charges a little more, it offers many unique Web-related and home networking features like you can even control TiVo from a mobile phone.

“Jim Denny, vice president of product marketing for TiVo said he was unsure if TiVo was building new Series3 boxes, but believes existing inventory should keep the device available through the start of 2008.”
